children using our resource hampers

We had previously worked with a group of year 4/5 children building raised beds as part of their garden project. Seeds were sown and young plants were planted. Some weeks later the children found massive holes (some over 40 cm deep) dug in their raised beds. One or two of the children reported they had seen a cat digging in the garden some days earlier and wondered if it was the guilty party.
Upon disscussion with the teacher we decided to offer the children the opportunity to speculate what might have happened and why. We offered the children a range of creative woodland resources along with other bigger materials from our workshop for them to use to represent their ideas. Over time the resources themselves suggested new possibilities, and the childrens stories increased in richness and complexity as a consequence.
